  • Schmeiss is a third option along with Pass and Make (The Penguin Book of Card Games page 306). The meaning of Schmeiss (pronounce shmyss) is the following: suppose is the nondealer turn (so it's the first turn of bidding) and he choose to Schmeiss, this mean that he's offering to the dealer two options: 1) accept the face up card as trump or 2) throw the hand in. If instead at the beginning the nondealer say Pass, now the dealer has the three options: Pass, Make and Schmeiss. One last consideration: Schmeiss increase the depth of the game and should be considerate as an concrete option if, for example, you fear that the opponent may score a lot of points in another suit as trump and at the same time you should have something for defend if the opponent choose to accept the turned suit as trump
