MinnMax’s Ben Hanson interviews Mike Mahardy on his career in games press right before he announces his next move in the industry. Mike was an intern at Game Informer back in 2012 before being hired at Gamespot where he grew into a more video-focused position. In the discussion we talk about what it’s like to be a recurring guest at Giant Bomb, why we want to marry Vinny Caravella, and what he’s looking for out of his mysterious next job. It would be really cool to get the beastcast's thoughts about what he is saying about them.
Hey yup found this on youtube! Will miss you on beastcast…also Ben..how can anyone be scared of ET?
Is that fake beard Ben?! That looks too good to be true.
WHO??
Mike is great. Eager to see where he goes.
It's likely foolish of me to try and respectfully disagree with (some) folks in the comment section, but I really like Giant Bomb. I like Jeff and Brad and I like Ben and Jan a lot, too. Obviously Dan was great and the whole GB vibe is worse-off for having lost him. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm an older guy in internet years, so maybe that informs my perspective…
I'm open to the possibility that maybe I'M the problem here, but I feel like Jeff and Brad tell it like it is. Maybe that's cynicism, but to me it always read as just down-to-earth and realistic. And it's usually pretty funny. Seems like they talk how people talk, which is why I enjoy listening to them so much. That's just my take.
Anyway, just in case another sad case like me makes the mistake of scrolling down to the comments of this video and sees all the GB hate, here's a like-minded normal old dickhead who still finds GB content relevant and, more importantly, pretty damn entertaining. No disrespect to anyone who doesn't feel that way.
P.S. I'm obviously here because I enjoy Mike's work, and I wish him the best moving forward!
Random thought, The Avengers of game journalism would be: Mike Mahardy, Tim Rogers, Greg Miller, Daemon Hatfield, & Jake Baldino #changemymind
Aw, I hardly knew ye. Good luck, Mahardy!
kotaku maybe?
Have really enjoyed the quality and creativity that you bring to your work! You are truly talented, and it’s awesome to see how all these years of hard work keep paying off. Wishing you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
Mahardy is great. I wish him the best!
Out of curiousity, I searched @VinnyCaravella. It literally says "Good listener"
I feel bad for him having to work at Giant Bomb with those snobby boring dudes. Vinnie and Dan are cool though.
i wish you guys would do more personal stories like this
Without dan and mike, beastcast should like take a month or 2 off and regroup lmao…
Glad to hear Resident Kinevil will be coming back, although I don't know how I will know when or where to watch it. I follow Mary Kish's Twitch channel so hopefully they will show it there.
Kotaku?
I suggested on a very early episode that you interview others who have left the corporate nest to to forge an independant direction. You guys had likely already had the idea but it's nice to see you reaching out. Risking security for autonomy is one of the most exciting things you can do in life and imo the gaming community needs more of it.
Never heard of Mike before but I wanna go bowling with him for some reason
I can't help but look into the fact that two dudes filled with positivity and energy (Dan and Mike) are both leaving to look for something new. of course I don't know if Mike is staying in the video game industry or not but I guess we'll find out soon.
Ben you're so snarky
I loved watching the Resident Kinevil series with Mike and Mary Kish. Those two had great chemistry for let's play style videos. His work as a journalist at gamespot was also quality. Goofy/ funny when he could be, but made great points when he was being serious and discussing games. Wish him luck at Giant Bomb! You're the man, Mike
I'm a fan. I enjoyed the video game discussions on the gamespot channel. Wondered why they stopped
It's funny because I look at MinnMax and giant Bomb as polar opposites. MinnMax emphasizes positivity, is usually well informed, and generally professional. Giant Bomb is incredibly cynical, often totally uninformed, and the opposite of professional.
My guess is Polygon or Kotaku…
Gonna miss hearing him on the Beastcast. Good luck with your next adventure!
I love these videos so much there so chill and it's nice to hear about some stuff that happens when the camera is off 🦆🦆🦆
I like that he made the exact same joke about AEW on the beastcast.
Mike kind of looks like Jon Hamm. I don't know if Mike knows who that is, though.
He’s got a weird Midwest accent, minnmax confirmed
Why is Ben always so red and greasy?
Timesplitters forever.
😊
I love mike Mahardy! Really wanna know where he ends up
